Dying your pet for Halloween

Countown to Halloween…one more day to go. I was originally going to do a post about top 10 Halloween costumes, however, upon my image search found various pet dye jobs from past Halloweens. Since these were obtained on-line through general image searching, I was unable to locate the author, therefore, don't have any specific information on how they dyed their dog/cat.

Most dog salons have specialty dyes formulated for dying your pet hair. I recommend going to a professional or at least they can lead you in the right direction. Although there are a lot of pet safe brands, the mess is not worth saving a few dollars as dogs can shake dye (which is a pain to get off the walls, take it from someone who has green/yellow hair as we speak) all over the place and or get dye while still damp all over furniture.

Unlike human hair, dogs and cats skin pores, breed depending, maybe too large to absorb certain chemicals. You want to make sure that the dye doesn't seep into the pores causing harm.

Costumes can be a fuss for pets, therefore, a good celebratory alternative is dying your pet.

This photo was e-mailed to me. Someone dyed their cat hair pink and put him/her in a Hello Kitty shirt.

For some reason, this picture makes me crave cotton candy.

This image was originally found on flicker. It supposed to be the Olympic rings, however, it looks like fruit loops stuck to the dog's fur or gummy candies.

Pride is for everyone...dogs to.

Halloween safety for your cat and dog

Halloween is also an occasion pets can enjoy. My black lab Freedom loves Halloween. He loves people coming to the door 'cause he thinks that they're visiting him. He also loves watching fireworks during his Halloween walk.

Fireworks aren't a favorite for most dogs. Last year, there was a large number of dogs whom ran away from their homes and ended up at the pound/shelter 'cause they were scared of the fireworks. If your pet gets frightened easily, send him/her to the kennel for the night or make sure the doggy door is locked on Halloween.

Even though Freedom is black, all dogs, if wearing a costume should wear something brightly colored or at least have a glow stick or two around their leash and collar. I picked up a few snazzy colors at the army surplus store which doubles as a safe jack-o-lantern light when we return home.

Not all pets like costumes. Most pet owners, myself included, love dressing their pets, however, if the pet is uncomfortable, this can be a serious hazard. Most costumes on the market are made for toy dogs. Rarely have I found anything for a lab of 68 lbs. Usually a cute Halloween scarf is good enough for the both of us in celebration.

Of course most pet owners, especially dog owners, know that chocolate is toxic to dogs. Children love chocolate, however, it's best to leave the chocolate treats to those home owners whom don't own dogs. For the safety of your pet, you may want to opt for non chocolate alternatives such as lollipops, gummy bears, etc. If you do suspect that your pup may have ingested some chocolate keep the Animal Poison control number on hand (888) 426-4435. Keep this number on your cell on speed dial just in case there are other dogs walking that night may end up in an accidental situation.

Xylitol, most commonly used as an artificial sweetener in diet candies and chewing gums is considered toxic to dogs. It causes a sudden drop in blood sugar levels which can lead to depression, similar to humans who ingest Xylitol in candy or gum. Also in some rare circumstances, liver failure has known to occur. Stick with the regular sugar candies on Halloween for the kids.

Although relatively harmless and non-toxic, keep pets away from pumpkins as it may cause digestion issues. Freedom used to have a habit when walking up to people's houses on Halloween by biting a piece of a neighbor's pumpkin only to vomit the pumpkin a few minutes later in front of the door step of the next house.

Cats are independent creatures of the night and although mostly aware of their surroundings, are most likely to knock over a lit jack-o-lantern causing a fire. I am all about being traditional including a lit candle in a jack-a-lantern, however, there are good lighting alternatives that look just as nice and can prevent a potential disaster. Glow sticks of any color can add a dynamic dimension to designs especially in green, yellow and red colors. You can also use a small flash light, mini strobe light, fake flickering candles or even battery operated LED lights.

Have a safe Halloween luv Sheila & Freedom (my black lab)

1 & 2 day air service reminder

Just a friendly reminder that all orders are processed Monday to Friday at 11:00 am PT. Orders placed over the weekend will be processed on Monday morning. The following is especially important for customers placing on-line orders for 1 or 2 day air service. If selecting 1 day air service after 11:00 am, the order will be processed the following business day.

Problem puppies off leash, unfixed mother How to deal

It's important to keep the peace with fellow neighbors.

The following was a complaint made on a Q&A dog board. Hopefully no one else has experienced this, however, these situations do unfortunately exist.

Okay my neighbours dog had 6 puppies sometime in August. They are cute as can be but they are now at least two months old and running the neighborhood along with the momma dog. The mom isn't fixed which she will probably end up pregnant again. I have asked the people to please do something about them because it is getting to the point where i can't even take my dogs out without dealing with other peoples dogs. I just am at a loss on what to do I don't want to call animal control because if my dogs happens to go over there i don't want them to call animal control on them. When I say something to them about the dogs it seems like they get mad. For example last night I went out to take my dogs out and looked on the porch and the mom and puppies were camped out on my grill cover just laying there.

In most cities, there is a leash law. It is in the person's best interest to find out these leash laws, print the law and place it in their mail box signed anonymously. If the situation does not improve, animal shelters will take the dogs and in most cases, will be adopted.

Writing a letter can be overwhelming in any circumstance as unlike phone or personal conversation, it is often difficult to dissect the tone. Below is an example from a few letter writing sites on how you can write a generic letter in regards to the situation above. You will also want to send a copy of the letter to animal control.

Dear Sir/Madam:

On (date of the contract), (summarize the complaint above).

As per city law (outline the laws and copy and paste if possible).

Please rectify the situation otherwise further action based on the law outlined above will have to forwarded.

Calling animal control may cause future problems with the neighbors, however, you do not have to inform the neighbour that it is you specifically making the call. Remember that this is for the welfare of the dogs, the rest of the neighbourhood as well as yourself.

Does Tripsy for Cat Kidney Failure really work? Petwellbeing.com

The following are testimonials received this week on our Tripsy for Cat Kidney failure.

"Gallstones - she had them removed and had a Cholecystoduodenostomy to divert bile flow directly from her gallbladder into her small intestine without going through the bile duct - as a result, it is more possible for her to get infections in her gallbladder or liver. She has had off and on liver infections since her surgery in April '07"

"She was diagnosed back in January.....she is on fluid therapy and some other medication from that time. Since I give her Tripsy her appetite is really good.... the combination of traditional treatment and Tripsy seem to work for her. She has energy, she eats (I cook for her) and she is a happy little lady."

"The veterinarian told me his organs were shutting down and that he should be put to sleep. That was two years ago. I refused to accept his death sentence and looked on the internet where I found Pet Wellbeing and products which helped my cat live."

"I have been using a combination of products that appear to have made a dramatic improvement in my cat's condition. His disease is chronic & will eventually take his life, but for the time being he's doing great, & I believe it's due to all of the healthy food , supplements, & TLC."

"Emma has been taking Tripsy for over a month now and what a difference in her health. She has gained 3 lbs and is like a kitten again. She feels so much better. I know her hereditary kidney disease will not be cured, but her health is so much better. Thank you so much for offering it. Tripsy gives her remaining years much better quality of life."

Does Plantaeris for Cat Diarrhea really work? Petwellbeing.com

Dear Petwellbeing.com,

I just had to write to express my extreme satisfaction with your product: "Plantaeris for Cat Diarrhea". My cat Maggie, who is now 18 1/2 years old, had been suffering with diarrhea for five months and was very lethargic. I had taken her to the vet many times and had tried to treat her with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, fiber, probiotics, and special diets, all with little success. After one dose of the "Plantaeris", she was instantly more alert and after just a couple of doses, the diarrhea was GONE! We are both thrilled and I can tell she feels like her old self again! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I just ordered more of your products and will definitely recommend your site to my friends.

Happy Thanksgiving/Columbus day from petwellbeing.com

Thanks to everyone for their patience as we were catching up on e-mails, order requests and voice messages during the Canadian Thanksgiving/Columbus day (US). I had a wonderful Vegetarian Thanksgiving with Tofurkey. There was a guest at the table by the name of Constantine, the cutest and most loving cat that I've ever encountered. Below is a picture of her. We both hope that the holiday was blessed with good wishes and good food.

Pet related post secret

PostSecret is a community art project where people release their secrets by anonymously mailing them on a homemade postcard. Frank Warren started PostSecret in November, 2004 and has since received thousands of secrets from all over the world.

I've sent a few post secrets myself to get certain secrets off my chest in a creative manner.

There was one anymous secret, pet related, which struck a funny chord with me even though this was someone's dark secret. I wanted to share this secret on this blog.

If you want to know more about Frank Warren and his post secret project, check out his web blog. http://postsecret.blogspot.com/

Speaking of pet and clothes, if you're in the Vancouver area the VSB has a course on sewing clothes for your pet worth checking out. There fall registration has ended, however, their winter registration begins on November 24th

Dealing with the loss of a pet

Sadly all pets have their time and we don't want them to go 'cause we love them. In most cases we love them more than family. I can speak from experience 'cause I’ve had a few pets die: A rabbit whom died in my arms literally after ingesting poisonous fumes from the carpet cleaning company, a degus who died of old age and a hamster when I was little.

Dealing with the loss of a pet, just like family or friends, is a step by step process. Time is what healed the loss of my pets, however, I was depressed for days 'cause my pets were my best companion.

Some people think it's taboo to grieve for an animal. I found it difficult to tell my old boss that I needed a day off 'cause I was grieving for the loss of my dead degus and instead said, "I'm dealing with the loss of a family member." This was true as pets are family and in the modern world, pets are treated as such.

Because it's taboo, finding animal loss support groups off the internet are few and far between.

The first step according to, Shiri Joshua, clinical psychologist whom counsels grieving pet owners, is to acknowledge the loss and be saddened.

The biggest mistake is taking the advice of friends, whom mean well, by replacing the dead pet with a new one. You wouldn't replace your mother if she died, a pet is no different. Healing time between pets is required and helps deal with the situation on hand.

The way I dealt with the loss of one pet vs another was very different. Some people grieve differently than if they had lost a human, therefore, grieving time and method needs to be respected by all parties involved.

Es clear for dog cancer testimonial

Hello,My name is Susanne Dorrell and I wanted to tell you how thankful I am for your product. My dog, Skeeterbug, was diagnosed with lung cancer in Feb.2008. The vet did an Xray of her chest after I had complained about severe coughing for the prior six months. He found that she had a tumor the size of an adult fist in her right lung. He predicted her life would now be coming to an end, and said this type of cancer spreads quickly. He was sad to tell me that he thinks I have about 1-6 months left with her. I was devastated. I forced myself to come to terms with the news, telling myself that she had lived out a good life. She is 12 1/2 years old, that's a long life for a large breed dog. I wasn't going to let her go that easy though. I researched this type of cancer and found out that it is rare for a dog to get lung cancer. Usually, the lung cancer in a canine starts as a cancer in another place on/in the body and then spreads to the lungs. She has three round cyst type growths in her neck and also one on her elbow. I was convinced I could find something to help her. I found a cancer diet on line and began to feed her that and also did a couple other small adjustments in her diet. I also feed her good quality dogfood, which is why I believe she has lived as long as she has until now. Then I ran into your website and read a couple testimonies about ES clear. I was desperate, I wanted to try anything to help her with this horrible death sentence. I was afraid she would start to have a lot of pain and did not want her to suffer. I was hesitant to purchase your product because I wasn't that familiar with using herbal remedies in dogs. I am so glad that I took the chance with your product. I purchase ES Clear each month. I am a single mom, and the price is a little high for me, but, I sacrifice other things in my life right now to buy this for my dog because the product works so well for her. I believe it has not only stopped the growth of the neck and elbow tumor, it has also started to shrink them slightly. She doesn't seem to be in a lot of pain, and she still has an appetite and runs around with my other dog. I am happy to say that she has passed her 1-6 month mark on her diagnosis. She is her at 7 months after finding the tumor in her lung. She has a couple bad days here and there, but, for the most part she is still alive and happy. Her coughing is still present and a little more severe, but it hasn't stopped her so far in her zest for life. I also am happy to say that I believe she will make it to her 13th birthday party on October 5th this year!!! I am so thankful I found your supplement! I give Petwellbeing permission to use any part of this testimony for advertising. It really is amazing! Susanne Dorrell and Skeeterbug!

Benefits of bathing your own dog

Last weekend I took Freedom, my black lab, for a self wash and a pet grooming place. Do not worry the "hose" is not on full blast, it was a sprinkle.

I understand that going to the groomers is quicker, less messier than bathing your own dog, however, the following are benefits to self bathing your dog.

Bonding with your dog.
Allows you to physically examine your dog for any abnormalities.

Es clear for cat cancer testimonial

The following are customer testimonials on our ES Clear for Cat Cancer received this week.

"Yes, this product for cancer in cats, the drops: it has been a slow but steady help w/ the swelling and infection of the tumor on my elderly cat. She actually loves the flavor. I put it in some "Cat-Sip" (milk esp. for cats) and she looks for it now, twice a day as Rx'd. Even tho she will probably never fully recover, this product has made her life a lot more comfortable. "

"Back in January, our little girl was diagnosed with cancer, after taking her to a specialist, who wanted to do radiation and chemo, I researched other alternatives as the above would have had extremely harsh effects on her. The doctors told me that if I did not treat her with chemo and radiation that she would not live any longer than 2 months.I ordered the ES Clear and she loves it. I I started her on ES Clear right away, after finding that all of the ingredients could be beneficial to her. As of today, 9 months later, she takes her ES Clear 2 times a day, everyday, and she is doing extremely well, she is more comfortable, plays, runs and jumps and acts like her old self again."
