Congestive Heart Failure in Dogs (continued)

"I have three Maltese with various degrees of heart murmurs, but my 11 yr old has CHF at this point and is coughing (that wet cough)primarily at night and early in the day. I am frantic because when he is NOT coughing he is his usual self--running up the stairs, playing, etc. He is on lasix and enalapryl. Can you please tell me what products you have that might help with the cough and alleviate some of his misery."
Cathy

Hello again Cathy,
I was able to talk to the manufacture and they state that you definitely cannot use the Respiratory Aid with Lasix.

Unfortunately I do not have a natural recommendation for you to aid you with you dog's coughing. Because Lasix and Enalapryl are both very serious heart and blood pressure drugs, you will need to confer with your vet on any additional treatments you wish to try.

I'm sorry we could not help you further. Best of luck to you

Feline ES Clear and its Preventative and Blood Cleansing Properties

"Good morning,

I have a question regarding ES Clear for Cats. Can a cat receive this treatment, if he does not have cancer? It sounds like a great product for good health as well. My cat has a lump on his leg, which he obtained from a bite. I thought this treatment might help it to heal, since ES Clear purifies the blood."

Hello,
Yes, ES Clear is fine to take if cancer is suspected or for a blood related illness. It will work to boost his immune system and detoxify the blood. This product can help any illness that can benefit from the body changes ES Clear supports.

The only caution I have when using the ES Clear when cancer is suspected but not diagnosed, is that if you have an incorrect self diagnosis, your pet may not be receiving the treatment he needs. If you decide with your vet not to test for cancer, watch your pet for improvements while on ES Clear. If you do not see improvements you may not be treating the correct illness.

Christmas Presents for Cats and Dogs

With Christmas just around the corner I am just finishing my holiday gift list. They really don't need gifts for my pets because the wrapping paper on the floor and the shinny balls on the Christmas tree keep them playing all day, but it makes me feel good to introduce something new for them.

This year my cats are getting little "PawBreakers". They are catnip that has been compressed into little balls. They are solid so they won't crumble and the cats can chase them around the house. They can also chew and eat them and then keep on playing. Unfortunately we can not stock them at PetWellbeing because they are only in Canada at the moment, but hopefully in the future we will be able to. They are also both getting new hemp collars (sage and brick). Our collars and leashes are new products for PetWellbeing, so I'm excited to have my cats test them out.

My dog is very spoiled this year. He is getting a new dog bed and body pillow. Unfortunately his bed was peed on by a visiting dog and even with washing, he would rather sleep on the floor than on it (I don't blame him). His body pillow has had its last mend. It is all patches now so it needs a new cover. He wrestles with the body pillow and it is great for his hips.

One thing that my pets do not get for Christmas is edible treats. I'm not a Scrooge, it is just that I train or reward my pets with treats I do not give them "just because". It helps them from gaining excess weight and does not promote begging. Plus on Christmas morning instead of gobbling up teats in under 5 seconds, we all get lots of play time the whole morning.

I would love to hear about anyone's perfect pet gift, or any other Christmas fun ideas.

Basic Facts on Diabetes in Cats

I receive many questions regarding cat diabetes from owners who are looking to purchase our Feline Mellit. Here are some basic facts I found.

Common Symptoms:
Increased thirst leading to frequent urination
Weight loss
Weakness
Depression
Signs of pain in the abdomen
Sudden blindness

Diabetes Mellitus is the inability to control blood sugar level. Insulin, secreted by the pancreas, regulates sugar blood level. When insulin production cannot be controlled, diabetes ensues. This can be due to obesity, genetics, stress, fluctuating hormones, medication, and lack of a nutritional diet. Insulin helps to regulate the blood sugar level by acting as a doorway between glucose and the cells that use glucose for energy. Without insulin, the cells have no energy source. The cells become hungry, and the animal will start to eat more in order to supply more energy to its body. The body goes into starvation mode and starts to use stored fat and protein cells as energy, hence the reason why pets tend to lose weight even though they consume more food. The excess glucose in the blood is flushed out by the kidneys through urination. Because of all the extra water being used to do this, the pet is often thirsty, and will urinate much more frequently. Diabetes tends to be more common in male cats than female cats. Higher risk pets tend to be neutered males and unsprayed females, and cats over 6 years of age. Breed is not a factor.

Diet for Chronic Kidney Failure in Dogs

"My 14 1/2 year old cockapoo has been diagnosed with chronic kidney failure (failing at 75% now). She is on Purina nf. Will any of your products help at this point? Are there recipes that I can prepare to help??"

Hello,
As long as your pet is not in pain or is suffering, I feel there is always hope. Kidney disease is a very hard problem to bounce back from but you can work with it to keep a quality of life.

Our product Tripsy is highly recommended. We receive lots of positive feed back from it and I hear many great stories over the phone from owners that are using it.

I do know that with kidney problems it is recommended to decrease the amount of protein and phosphorus in the food. Usually alternate sources of protein, like hard boiled eggs, are used instead of the usual beef or chicken. I do not have any information on Purina nf for you, but check the ingredients and if you still have questions click on the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of www.purina.com.

I have also added a link to another vet site that deals with your question as well.

Dog Skin Problems after Round Worm Treatment

"I wanted to know if worming my puppy will cause hair loss. He had severe round worm. I have noticed thinning hair around his head mostly eye area and the top of his back near his tail. He is scratching and chewing these areas. He does not have fleas or any sores. Could worms cause this? or the worm meds?"

I know one of the symptoms of round worm can be excessive itching. Also the accumulation of toxins can cause skin disorders. Skin is an organ of elimination so it is sensitive to taking prescriptions.

Definitely make sure that his diet is good. If he is on grocery store food you may want to add a food supplement like Nupro. Also as long as the skin is not painful groom him to stimulate the hair re-growth. Even rubbing him with a dry cloth helps to distribute the oils in his coat and stimulate the skin. Unless it has been diagnosed by a vet as having a flea allergy or other specific problems, I would not recommend bathing him. He may just need to heal.

If the hair loss starts to get worse go and see your vet to rule out a more serious problem.
