Some human foods are toxic to dogs/cats

Although cooking home made meals are encouraged, especially with the pet food scare not too long ago, there are some foods that are toxic/poisonous for both cats and dogs. Special care needs to be taken to ensure that nutritional needs are met, preparation is easy and is tasty. There are plenty of specialty dog/cat food recipe books at your local book store that cater to both owners and pets needs in terms of dietary restrictions, complexity and or enjoyment. The following items are toxic to both cats and dogs: Onions, garlic and most root related vegetables, raw green tomatoes, chocolate, grapes/raisins and milk.

Milk is not necessarily toxic, however, many are lactose intolerant. They don't actually need milk in their diet. Available in most pet/health stores are specialty formulated cat milk substitutes that can be used in baking or given "as is" as a sometimes treat.

Happy Monday and stay tuned on Friday for another pet recipe that I feed Freedom, my black lab, which is also great for cats.

Luv Sheila & Freedom
