Difference between hyper and hypo thyroidism

I received a good question in my e-mail box this morning. A potential customer inquired about the difference between hyper and hypo thyroidism. Although I am not a certified veterinarian or have any medical background, I was able to search on-line in conjunction with utilizing the Webster's on-line dictionary to try and clarify the two.

The general difference between hyper and hypo is that hyper is over activity and hypo is lower activity. Determining exactly which of the two your dog/cat may have requires consultation with a certified vet before making sure that you're administering the correct medication and or alternative supplements to treat either or condition.

The actual definition of hypothyroidism according to the Webster's on-line dictionary is:
Deficient activity of the thyroid gland; also : a resultant bodily condition characterized by lowered metabolic rate and general loss of vigor.

Where is the definition of hyperthyroidism according to the Webster's on-line dictionary is: Excessive functional activity of the thyroid gland; also : the resulting condition marked especially by increased metabolic rate, enlargement of the thyroid gland, rapid heart rate, and high blood pressure

Once again, before self diagnosis, we strongly encourage the consultation with a vet.
