DOG'S NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION FOR MORE EXCERSISE
If pets could make a New Year's resolution I'm sure one of them would be to get in shape and exercise more, however, pets depend on us, their owners to help them achieve this.
Understandably during the Winter months the weather can be discouraging. Besides walking outdoors there are indoor alternatives to increase their activity level, raise their metabolism and to prevent obesity which can lead to kidney and possibly heart failure and or medical complications.
Dog's can't talk which is why it's important to be aware of your dogs response through various such as panting, resting, sweating, paw discomfort etc. Like humans a dog who normally doesn't engage in a lot of physical activity, especially toy or purse dogs, needs to start slowly, gradually increasing the pace of their physical activity by 10 minutes each week.
We've all had those days in which we aren't mentally or physically feeling our best, however, our dogs still need exercise. You can hire one of the neighborhood kids to walk your dog for 30 minutes allowing him/her to earn a little pocket change without sacrificing the health of your dog. I raised money for my gym membership last year by walking dogs for the elderly.
For larger and or older dogs a good alternative, especially during the summer, is to take the dog to a local public dog park/beach for a swim. The water pressure strengthens muscles and joints in a safe low impact environment, especially for older dogs who aren't able to take a lot of physical demands unlike younger dogs.
Walking the dog in any season can be a family event. Not only are you providing your dog much needed exercise, you're also bonding with your family. 30 minutes of family walk time makes the rest of the evening and chores less stressful and easier to accomplish.

Ha ha ha... Nice thinking. But our dogs will take resolutions like this only on the eve of new year. Hope this post will be an eye opener for the imperfect pet owners. Keep posting. I love this blog like anything...
Making sure your dog gets enough exercise is a great New Years resolution! Exercise is a key contributor to your dog's overall health, and can help him or her maintain a healthy weight. This is important, as overweight dogs can face serious medical problems, including heart disease, arthritis, skin conditions and breathing issues. We’ve pulled together some quality information at http://www.stopcanineobesity.com to help you identify and address these health concerns, but it’s best to visit a veterinarian to learn more about the risks.
