Customer's question -Pituitary Cushions
We had a customer that had a dog with "Pituitary Cushions" disease and she was wondering which product could be helpful for her dog. Cushions disease and Cushings disease are basically the same thing. If you do on-line research with the key word " Dog Cushions disease", you will notice that the result will show up as Cushings disease.
To help you understand what cushing is, I will quote the information that I found on line which is very straight forward.
"Dogs with cushing disease have an over production of the adrenal hormone. A dog can develop it two way. 1 it can be cause by a tumor on the adrenal gland or 2, a pituitary gland tumor which causes the adrenal gland to produce too much corticosteroids/adrenal hormone. Technially, there is a 3rd way which is basically "induced" or man made by a dog being given high doses of prednizone/corticosteroid for a prolonged period of time.
The way to correct that is to slowly wean a dog off the prednizone until things are back to functioning normal. If a dog has a tumor on it's adrenal gland, surgery can be done to remove it and the surgery which is very risky is done by a specialist. If the tumor is not caucerous, there is a possibilty of a dog regaining it health. If it's being caused by a pituitary tumor (which is located at the base of the brain) they do not remove them. How they treat them is with medication that kills off the abnormal gland just enough to control the amount of corticosteroids being produced and keep the levels at a normal range..
Blood testing is done on a regular basis to measure the levels of corticosteroids being produced.. There is no cure for cushing disease, it's a terminal disease, and treatment is basically done to providing a better quality of life, not to extent it. If the tumor is small,with proper management dogs can live years with the disease. "
