My cat of 13 years, Harley recently ate a Jade plant leaf (over Thanksgiving weekend) and it had intestinal side effects that were treated by an emergency stay at the vet and an IV for fluids, etc. We took him home afterwards and he began to eat again and drink but no "eliminating of solid waste". We then had to bring him back to get an enema which produced the Jade leaf. He seemed to be recovering and now in early January we notice his hearing is going to almost gone. There is no conclusive studies on whether this is related. During his stay at the emergency Vet, they did say he had hyperthroid. Does anyone know if this hyperthyroid condition untreated for about 3-4 weeks would cause a side effect of a cat loosing their hearing?
He is now on medicine from the Vet and that visit cost $264 - with recommendation we come back in a month. Obviously I love my cat, but I can't afford the vet bills. Does anyone have info on the related deafness and also on the herbal medicine for cats for hyperthyrooid. Thanks, Deutzberger
In response to deautzberger, I must say the Resthyro for hyperthyroidism in cats is a wonderful product! Out cat needed medication for this condition about three months ago. I happened across Pet Well Being in a Google search using some term about my cat's symptoms, such as, "increased water consumption in felines." I'm strong on herbal use myself, so I asked our vet about this product. He researched it on the web and told us it looked great. We have had wonderful results, with Princess now regulated nicely in her thyroid function; all the bad symptoms are gone, and she's her former 16-year-old self.
I do not know anything about hearing loss in cats. Princess has excellent hearing.
